With my Ireland run looming ever bigger on the horizon, a general sense of panic is beginning to settle in. For a start, my achilles is still not 100% right, although I did manage to complete my weekly mileage goal of 20 miles (30km) this week. I’m planning to increase it by around five miles each week until I start the run in July, which is quite a steep rate of increase, but hopefully gentle enough to not over-stress my ankle. It’s a balancing act, because I’m sorely lacking the fitness right now to take on such a huge challenge.
My achilles is part of the panic. The logistics involved are also rather stress inducing. In order to live for 10 weeks, the plan is for Marietta and Ossian to travel around meeting me along the way in a camper van. It’s a nice idea. Until you try to hire or buy a camper van, and you realise that actually you need one of those big, hefty motorhomes if you’re going to live in it for 10 weeks, not some slimline VW camper van thing. And then you look at the cost of those big motorhomes and, ‘shoot, how much?!’ and you realise you don’t have that kind of money just lying around.
