A sideways attempt at motorhoming
We take our new motorhome for a test night away ahead of the looming Big Ireland Run
“What shall we call our motorhome?” I asked as we drove up the M5 towards north Devon for our first test outing in the new van ahead of the Big Ireland Run. It was also a rare family trip away - even if it was only for one night. “We have to give it a name,” I said.
“Jeremy,” Ossian suggested, for no other reason - he himself admitted - than that it was the first thing that popped into his head. It sounded a bit too English, I thought. No offence to any Jeremys out there, but it just wasn’t inspiring me.
When we’d turned on the TV, there’d been a copy of Return of the Jedi still in the DVD player. “Maybe we should call it the Millennium Falcon?” I said, to muted response. Uma, for some reason, thought we should call it Patricia.
We spent one night in Croyde, north Devon, on a site for motorhomes a few minutes walk from the beach. We felt like complete novices pulling up amid all the other seasoned motor-homers. Our first job was to decide which way to park. For some reason, every other motorhome had reversed into their pitch, but we reasoned that if we parked sideways, we’d have our canopy and seating area sheltered from the wind. But why was no-one else parked that way?
