The highs and lows of an ultra detox
What did I learn from 10 days without sugar, carbs, dairy or caffeine?
I’m sitting writing this in a cafe with a coffee and a croissant on the first day after completing my 10-day detox. I made it, folks. Although I almost didn’t.
For the full reasons why I was doing a detox, you’ll need to read last week’s Monday Musings, but basically my wife was taking it on in an effort to tackle some long-standing health issues, and she asked me to support her by doing it too. I agreed without really taking on board what that actually entailed, and it was only two days in, as I shivered and ached as though I had the flu, that I started looking into what it was we were actually doing.
I still can’t claim to fully understand it, but in essence we were temporarily cutting out all sugar, carbs, caffeine, dairy and a few other things. It was a sort of low-fat, vegetarian version of a keto diet, with the goal of reducing our blood sugar levels and giving our metabolism a system re-set, or at least a break from the constant blood sugar spikes it was accustomed to.
So what was it like?
